Well, the newprotest charity has officially kicked off - I took the money I started out with and spent about $200 on requested items: space heaters, blankets, warm clothes, and some toys for some kids. In the coming week, I'll be making some grocery shopping runs with some of the families I'm helping to support, and plan to buy some quick-prepare/easy-to-distribute food for folks roaming the streets in downtown Olympia. I'm sure I'll have to get a permit or something for any food-related work, so I'll call around on Monday to see what needs to be done for that. I still have quite a bit of money left to spend; I just need to find a strategic way of doing it. How exciting! It's like I get to help people and play a resource management game!

In other news, I've given some consideration into becoming a non-profit organization. If folks are just paying their tithe as their charitible donations, it's probably not an issue; donating 10% of your income won't get you audited by the IRS. But there are some folks who want to donate just so they can get a tax break... and if that's the case, I'd have to file as a tax-exempt non-profit organization for them to get that break. How complicated. I'm still looking into it.

Lastly, my internet service provider helps out non-profit organizations. One of the ways they do it is by helping to put on a charity concert, where I'd find a series of bands willing to play, and zhonka would cover the up front costs, and then recoop those costs from the donations and give the remaining money to the charity. Also, zhonka gives assistance to non-profit organizations through offering high-speed internet connectivity and computers. Wow! That's pretty rad. So... now I'm in the process of putting together a formal mission statement and the such. That way, I can share that with folks interested in contributing as well as to the folks I'm actually helping out. Good times.

If you want to contribute to the cause in any way (blankets, backpacks, money, grocery-store gift cards, etc., etc.), email me! I can be reached at:
