From the FAQ on the Red Cross site:
"The state Homeland Security Department had requested--and continues to request--that the American Red Cross not come back into New Orleans following the hurricane. Our presence would keep people from evacuating and encourage others to come into the city."
To a degree, I understand what the Feds are doing. The Red Cross is not actually equipped to do search/rescue, so it makes sense that the Feds secure the area before letting volunteer workers come in and help. However, you'd think it would make sense to pave the way for those volunteer workers to at least provide some help to the folks that are still stuck in NOLA. That really should be a priority.
