FALSE SENSE OF INSECURITY

You're not going to die from a terrorist attack. Relax.

Picked up from boingboing, Ohio State University's John Mueller makes a surprising claim, backed up with credible documents and research: In Israel, you are "four times more likely to die in a car wreck than as a result of a terrorist attack." In the US, the odds of dying in terrorist attack are less likely than being struck by lightening.

And yet the US has many people convinced that there are Islamic extremists hiding under every rock, behind every tree, threatening our way of life and ready to blow us up once they have the opportunity. Is this a legitimate concern? Was it a legitimate concern during the Cold War when people were told that the Communists were hiding under every rock, and behind every tree? Or has the US government itself taken the role of terrorist against its own people?

The point of terrorism is to create terror, and by cynically convincing us that our very countries are at risk from terrorism, our politicians have delivered utter victory to the terrorists: we are terrified.

This is the PDF document by Mueller, and it outlines the argument against the fear-machine created by current administration and politicians who capitalize on fear to promote their own agenda.

Read it. And if you're still afraid afterwards... you might be a conspiracy theorist.
