CHARITY PLANS

I've had a few more ideas about the direction in which I want my charity to head. One idea that I've had kicking around for a while is to create employment opportunities. In Washington state, we have a WorkFirst program designed to help families get out of poverty by connecting with employers who would hire people in the WorkFirst program. The employers get a tax break, and the employees get themselves out of poverty over time. It's a great plan, really... but it only applies to people with children. Don't get me wrong - people with children need help, and I really think that the WorkFirst program is great. However, there's a ton of folks in Olympia who need work and have no children, and the WorkFirst program can't help them.

One plan I've been working on is an employment-creation program. I'm not sure what it'll look like yet, but it involves me taking some of my tithe money (and donations, grants, etc., etc.) and creating jobs. Originally, I had the idea of simply hiring folks to work around my house - maids or yard workers or something like that... but I'd rather figure out a way to create work that'll generate money. This money wouldn't be for me - it would be for people I "hire," such that they would find themselves working for themselves in the end. I just want to create a structure that'll give people work and get them to a point of self-sufficiency.

Again - I have no idea what this will look like. I mean... I could just build a small factory that'll provide assembly-line work, and make enough money to first pay off the start-up costs, and then give all the workers the remaining profit... but I don't really like the idea of having low-wage workers just making stuff for other companies; it would be much cooler to have them making something of their own creation. I'm just not sure how that would work. However, this is certainly the direction I want to go, so I'll be banging around on ideas for this.

Oh - I'm still trying to come up with a name for my non-profit organization. I really want to stay from newprotest name, since I'd like that to be a completely different entity. Any ideas?
